Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety condition caused by experiencing or witnessing very stressful, frightening or distressing events. Although it has become most commonly associated with soldiers returning from combat, a wide variety of events and experiences can cause PTSD, including:

  • Violent personal assaults, such as sexual assault, robbery or mugging
  • Sexual abuse, violence or severe neglect
  • Serious road accidents
  • Natural disasters, such as floods or earthquakes
  • Being held hostage
  • Terrorist attacks
  • Witnessing violent deaths
  • Military combat

PTSD can develop immediately after the activating event, but sometimes it doesn’t occur until weeks, months or even years later. Post-traumatic stress is surprisingly common. It is estimated to affect about 1 in 3 people who have a traumatic experience and affects a total of about 3% of the population in any one year (that’s about 1.9 million people).

The exact symptoms of PTSD vary from person to person, but most common symptoms are listed below. Different individuals will typically experience different combinations of these symptoms.

  • Repeated, involuntary and distressing intrusive memories of traumatic events
  • Recurrent nightmares related to the events
  • Flashbacks in which an individual feels like the events are re-occurring
  • Extreme distress at exposure to cues that resemble or symbolize the events
  • Persistent avoidance of external reminders of the events
  • Persistent fear, anger, guilt or shame
  • Inability to experience positive emotions
  • Inability to remember important aspects of the event
  • Persistent and exaggerated negative beliefs about oneself or the world
  • Persistent and exaggerated blame of self or others
  • Significant reduction in interest in significant activities
  • Feeling detachment or estrangement from others
  • Significant change in aggression or irritability
  • Dangerous or self-destructive behaviour
  • Difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep or restless sleep
  • Overly focused on threat
  • Exaggerated startle response
  • Difficulty concentrating
